CAUT Fair Dealing Week – February 24-28, 2025
CAUT is once again celebrating Fair Dealing Week. Fair dealing is a critical legal tool enshrined in the Copyright Act that balances the rights and interests of the Canadian public with those of copyright owners. Protecting and enhancing fair dealing for users, learners, educators and researchers ensures information and knowledge are accessible.
Fair Dealing Week is an important opportunity to raise awareness about and advocate for the benefits of balanced copyright laws for the education sector and all Canadians.
We invite academic staff associations to promote and participate in the following initiatives to mark this international recognition of Fair Dealing Week:
Virtual keynote address from Carys Craig
Carys Craig is a legal scholar and copyright and artificial intelligence expert at Osgoode Hall Law School. The title of her keynote is “Fair Dealing and AI in the Academy: Reflections on the Right to Research.” The event will take place online on Thursday, February 27, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM (Eastern Time). To participate, please access the webinar registration.
Social media engagement
CAUT will share social media content highlighting the importance of fair dealing and the damage to the public domain caused by the 2023 extension of copyright protection as a result American demands during the CUSMA negotiations. We encourage academic staff associations to share this content, or pictures of members holding a sign that reads, “I am a creator and I support fair dealing” on social media using the hashtags #fairdealingworks and #faircopyright.
