Professeure de l’Université Concordia arrêtée et détenue dans la prison Evin en Iran
Madame Homa Hoodfar, Professeure émérite à l’Université Concordia, a été arrêtée et est détenue en Iran depuis le lundi 6 juin 2016. Depuis son arrestation et sa libération sous caution au début du mois de mars 2016, alors que son passeport a été saisi et que son téléphone, son ordinateur et ses livres ont été confisqués, Professeure Hoodfar a subi à plusieurs reprises des interrogations longues et épuisantes. Empêchée de quitter le pays, Mme Hoodfar a depuis été arrêtée de nouveau et la nature des accusations portées contre elle reste inconnue.
Aucune explication n’a été fournie quant aux motifs de son arrestation et de sa détention. Sa famille et son avocat n’ont pas eu la permission de la voir. Mme Hoodfar n’a pas accès aux médicaments sur ordonnance qui lui sont essentiels pour traiter une maladie neurologique rare (Myastenia Gravis). Comme Mme Hoodfar a récemment souffert d’un léger accident vasculaire cérébral, la détérioration de son état de santé en prison est grandement préoccupante.
Les allégations portées contre Professeure Hoodfar sont dénuées de fondements; Mme Hoodfar est un membre respecté de la communauté de l’Université Concordia depuis 1991, une anthropologue prolifique de renommée internationale admirée tant par ses collègues que par ses étudiants pour l’approche nuancée et rigoureuse déployée dans ses travaux ethnographiques. Ses recherches, qui portent sur les femmes dans les sociétés du Moyen-Orient, sont de nature exclusivement universitaires et ne visent d’aucune façon la prise de positions politiques ou subversives; en réalité, elle a travaillé de façon assidue tout au long de sa carrière dans le but de dissiper les stéréotypes sur le Moyen‑Orient par une approche strictement anthropologique.
Professeure Hoodfar se trouvait en visite dans sa famille en Iran, mais effectuait également des recherches de nature historique et archivistique sur la participation des femmes dans la vie publique, au moment même où un certain nombre de femmes étaient élues au parlement iranien. Elle est innocente face aux allégations faites à son endroit et est détenue de façon injuste. Nous sommes indignés par ces événements et considérons son arrestation comme une attaque très grave contre sa liberté universitaire. Avec l’Association canadienne des professeures et professeurs d’université (ACPPU), la Fédération québécoise des professeures et professeurs d’université (FQPPU), et les autres associations facultaires auxquelles nous sommes apparentés au Québec, au Canada et dans le monde, nous demandons à l’honorable Stéphane Dion, ministre des Affaires étrangères du Canada, et le très honorable Justin Trudeau, premier ministre du Canada,d’agir rapidement et de façon concertée afin d’obtenir la libération immédiate et sans condition de Professeure Hoodfar.

Along with the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT), the Fédération québécoise des professeures et professeurs d’université (FQPPU), and our sister faculty associations throughout Quebec, Canada, and the world, we call upon The Honourable Stéphane Dion and The Right Honourable Prime Minister Trudeau to act in a concerted and swift manner to secure Dr. Hoodfar’s immediate and unconditional release.

FQPPU urges release of Professor Homa Hoodfar detained in Iran
Montreal, June 10, 2016 – The Fédération québécoise des professeures et professeurs d’université denounces the unjustified arrest of the Irano-Canadian anthropologist Homa Hoodfar, jailed in the Teheran’s terrible Evin prison, where political detainees are kept.The FQPPU is highly worried about the charge of « cooperation with a foreign state against the Islamic Republic of Iran » held against this Concordia University professor, a world renowned expert on women’s role and sexuality in Islamic societies.
The FQPPU calls on the Iranian authorities to immediately release Dr Hoodfar and urges the Canadien government to use all diplomatic means at its disposal to secure her release and safe return to Canada.
Since 1991, the FQPPU reprensents the majority of regular professors from French and English language universities in Quebec.

Concordia University Professor Arrested and Detained in Iran’s Evin Prison
Dr. Homa Hoodfar, a Professor Emeritus at Concordia University, has been arrested and detained in Iran since Monday, 6 June 2016. Since her initial arrest and release on bail in early March 2016, when her passport was seized and her phone, computer and books were confiscated, Dr. Hoodfar has been subjected to numerous lengthy and grueling interrogations. Prohibited from leaving the country, Hoodfar has now been arrested again and we do not know under what charges.
The basis for this arrest and detention has not been explained and her family and lawyer have not been allowed to see her. Hoodfar also does not have access to a prescription medication she must take for a rare neurological illness (Myasthenia Gravis); having recently suffered a mild stroke, her deteriorating health while in the prison is of grave concern.
The allegations being made against Dr. Hoodfar are completely unfounded; Hoodfar has been a highly respected member of the Concordia community since 1991, an internationally renowned and prolific anthropologist admired by colleagues and students alike for the evenhanded and rigorous approach she takes in her ethnographic work. Her research, which focuses on women in Middle Eastern societies, is exclusively academic and in no way political or subversive; in fact, she has worked assiduously throughout her career to dispel stereotypes about the Middle East through purely scholarly pursuits.
Professor Hoodfar was in Iran for a family visit, but was also conducting historical and archival research on women’s participation in public life, which coincided with a time when a number of women had just been elected to the Iranian parliament. She is innocent of the allegations being made against her and is being held unjustly. We are outraged by these developments and consider her arrest to be a grievous assault on her academic freedom.
